These pictures are stark examples of how human ‘civilization’ is proving to be a bane for the ecosystem. They show mindless river bed mining in progress at the Balasan river in Siliguri, West Bengal. This is how we corrode our environment with our never ending needs. Once a beautiful Himalayan stream, the Balasan is now reduced to a dying skeleton of a river by years of sand mining. It is a haunting site that reminds us of how as an all-grabbing species our greed has eclipsed any better judgement left in us. Does this destruction stop anytime soon, or do we sit and watch this planet eventually implode?
